In 1892 an 18th century mansion, the Balvenie New House, began its conversion into the Balvenie whisky distillery. After 15 months of renovation, it was finished on May 1st 1893, which is when the first batch of whisky distillation began at the Balvenie Whisky distillery. It lies within the Convals in Duftown. What sets it apart is its hugely different character. It is one of the few scotch distillers that can tout its in-house floor maltings, using only locally hand-cut peat. It has a reputation of maintaining not only its traditional and humble beginnings, but holding strict adherence to its quality standards.
Among The Top 10 Selling Single Malt Whisky
It has quickly become the ninth best settling single malt whiskies and continues to grow on the worldwide whisky market. It is owned and operated by William Grant & Sons proprietors, who also own the Speyside residing distilleries Glenfiddich and Kininvie, both of which are award winning as well. William Grant was a man who worked his way through the art of distilling eventually becoming a manager and clerk. After years of working for other distilleries, he decided to open up his own operation and built the Balvenie in 1886. He maintained an active role in all aspects of the operation until he died in 1923 at the age of 83…keeping with the tradition that he began when he first opened the distillery.
Balvenie Whisky Is Matured In Two Woods
The Balvenie Doublewood single malt Scotch whisky is a 12 year old single malt that holds its tradition from being matured in two woods. Using two woods adds to the distinct flavor of the Balvenie Whisky and lends its customer flavor. It differs from other whiskies in that it is transferred from oak whisky casks, which is customary to a first fill Spanish oak sherry cask that previously held bourbon. This unique process brings out the richness of the sherry wood and adds to the fullness of the flavor. It is part of the secret distilling methods that add to the unique character of this distinct concoction, unparalleled by any other.
